The following is a selection of some of the Club’s past events. Events are a very important part of the Club’s activities since they help to further its conservation activities by raising its overall profile and are the ideal way for members to get together, discuss their common interests and enjoy themselves.
Pickle Day 2016 Monday 7th November 2016
A Pickle Day celebration was held at the National Liberal Club in Whitehall on Monday 7th November, close to the Admiralty where Lieutenant John Lapenotiere delivered Vice-Admiral Cuthbert Collingwood’s memorable despatch about victory at the Battle of Trafalgar, with his famous words: ‘Sir, we have won a great victory, but we have lost Lord Nelson!’
A private viewing of the Emma Hamilton Exhibition at the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich was attended by members on the evening of Friday the 4 November. The 1805 Club has played a major part in revitalising the memory of Lady Hamilton, and this 1805 Club event was to continue that commemoration.
Trafalgar Night Dinner Saturday 22nd October 2016
The Trafalgar Night Dinner held at HMS Nelson, Portsmouth.
Menorca Visit October 2016
Both the Royal Navy and United States Navy have important historical connections with the island, which was under British rule for much of the 18th Century, and the Royal Navy had a major presence there until 1815. During this period, the first Royal Naval Hospital was built on the Isla del Rey in Mahon Harbour, indicating the permanency of the Royal Navy's presence. The 1805 Club is also now becoming involved in fundraising towards the restoration of the hospital.
The United States Navy was involved with Menorca for some 25 years from about 1815 and the eventual US 6th Fleet was ‘born’ here. A US cadet training school was established on an island adjacent to Isla del Rey, an early precursor of Annapolis. There will be more of an ‘American theme’ to this year’s visit, which will also tie in with some American features in the next edition of the Trafalgar Chronicle, expected to issue in late October.
AGM and Members’ Day Saturday 14th May 2016
The AGM and The Cecil Isaacson Memorial Lecture took place in the Trafalgar Room, HMS Nelson Wardroom, Portsmouth.
The Cecil Isaacson Memorial Lecture was given by Dr James Davey, Curator of Naval History at the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich, titled ‘Beyond the storm: the Royal Navy in the aftermath of Trafalgar’.
