The following is a selection of some of the Club’s past events. Events are a very important part of the Club’s activities since they help to further its conservation activities by raising its overall profile and are the ideal way for members to get together, discuss their common interests and enjoy themselves.
A Royal Celebration at Windsor Castle, Windsor Friday 9th November 2007
This unique and unforgettable event celebrated the delivery of the news of the Battle of Trafalgar by post-chaise to his Majesty King George III at Windsor Castle on 6th November 1805. The re-enactment and champagne reception, in the Queen's Guard Chamber at Windsor Castle was held in the presence of His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh KG KT, who is seen at the left of the picture watching the arrival of the post-chaise. The occasion was attended by 200 guests who were also celebrating the part the harness horse played during this period of history, highlighted by Lieutenant Lapenotiere's 267 mile, 37 hour journey from Falmouth to the Admiralty in London with Vice Admiral Collingwood’s famous Trafalgar Dispatch.
The 1805 Club Trafalgar Dinner, Newhouse, Salisbury Saturday 27th October 2007
This very popular annual event was held for the 16th year at Newhouse, near Salisbury. The evening included a lecture by Professor Eric Grove on the Nelson legacy, a champagne reception, a fireworks display and a candle-lit dinner in the Ballroom. Her Majesty’s Lord Lieutenant of Wiltshire was principal guest of honour and the ‘Immortal Memory of Lord Nelson and all those who fell with him’ was delivered by the chairman, Peter Warwick.
Nelson Legacy Conference, Portsmouth Saturday 29th September 2007
The 1805 Club is a founder member of the Nelson Legacy Conference Series. The inaugural conference Following Nelson: Legacy in Warfare and Society was held at the Royal Naval Museum and was attended by the Series’ patron Admiral Sir Jonathon Band KCB ADC, First Sea Lord and Chief of the Naval Staff. Afterwards a dinner for 90 guests was held on the lower gun deck of HMS Victory. The next conference in the series is in 2009.
The Glorious First of June Weekend, Langar Hall, Nottinghamshire Saturday 2nd June 2007
The weekend marked the 10th anniversary of the Garter Knight’s Dinner organised by The 1805 Club at which the late Admiral of the Fleet Lord Lewin, the last naval Garter Knight, was guest of honour. The anniversary event included a reception and dinner at Langar Hall, which is the birthplace of Admiral Lord Howe, the first naval Garter Knight, a commemorative service at Langar’s Church of St Andrew and a tour of Belvoir Castle, the private home of Their Graces the 11th Duke and Duchess of Richmond. As a climax, His Grace the Duke fired seven guns captured from the French.
