Rededication of the tombs of Admiral Sir Thomas Bladen Capel and Admiral Sir Robert Otway, conserved by the Club at Kensal Green Cemetery, London Saturday 10th July 2010
The Club recently conserved the tomb of Admiral Sir Thomas Capel, who served in HMS Vanguard under Nelson at the Nile and commanded HMS Phoebe at Trafalgar, and also that of Admiral Sir Robert Otway who was present to the ‘Battle of the Glorious First of June’ and commanded HMS London at Copenhagen. The Club Chaplain, the Reverend Peter Wadsworth, conducted rededication ceremonies at these tombs at this event.
The ceremonies were followed by a buffet reception with wine and some spiced rum, known as “Nelson’s Blood” obtained from the inn “The Lord Nelson” at Burnham Thorpe, Nelson’s birthplace. Following the Reception, those interested toured the cemetery, as many with naval connections are interred there.
Others interred at Kensal Green include Admiral Sir George Cockburn who conveyed Napoleon to St Helena in HMS Bellerophon, and who was also responsible for burning down the White House during the War of 1812 against the United States. Others include Sir William Beatty, Nelson’s surgeon at Trafalgar for whom the Club erected a memorial plaque several years ago, and Lady Jane Franklin, the wife of Sir John Franklin who commanded the expedition in HMS Erebus and Terror to discover the North West Passage, the ships being lost with all hands.
