Events are a very important part of the Club’s activities since they help to further its conservation activities by raising its overall profile and are the ideal way for members to get together, discuss their common interests and enjoy themselves.
Trafalgar Night Dinner Saturday 26th October 2013
The annual Trafalgar Night Dinner was again at Newhouse, Wiltshire. The evening included a talk and the traditional fireworks display. Monday, 21 October 2013 – Trafalgar Ceremony at St Paul’s Cathedral, London. The annual Wreath Laying Ceremony was held at Nelson’s Tomb in St Paul’s Cathedral in London on Monday 21 October 2013.
East Midland’s Regional Group Friday 12th July 2013
Lecture and lunch was held at Langar Hall on Friday the 12 July 2013. Our speaker was David Vines White, who is Somerset Herald in Ordinary, and an expert on the tangled but fascinating subject of Nelson's heraldry. The admiral was something of a trial for the College of Heralds: his ‘supporters’, a sailor and a lion tearing the flag of Spain, were eccentric and he tended to change the design of his coat of arms quite frequently. Given that we use a defunct one of them as our logo, this was of a special interest for us.
Whitechapel Bell Foundry and Tower Bridge Saturday 8th June 2013
Visits to the Whitechapel Bell Foundry and Tower Bridge on Saturday 8 June 2013, were both fascinating and informative and greatly enjoyed by those members who attended. Great interest has already been shown for repeat visits which it is hoped to be arranged for sometime during 2014.
AGM and Members’ Day Saturday 18th May 2013
The AGM and Members’ Day was held at the East Indian Club, 16 St James’ Square, London. This year it was attended by more members than in previous years and proved to be a great success. The Cecil Isaacson Memorial Lecture was given to a packed hall by Michael Crumplin MB BS MRCS FRCS (Eng and Ed) FHS FINS, entitled ‘The death of an admiral: surgery in Nelson’s navy’, which was a fascinating insight into surgery on board ship. Members greatly enjoyed the day.
