Jorge Juan – The legacy of a scientific seaman

From now until March 31 2024, the Museo Naval in Madrid will host a temporary exhibition titled “Jorge Juan. The legacy of a scientific sailor”.

In honor of the 250th anniversary of Jorge Juan y Santacilia's passing, the Naval Museum is unveiling an exhibition that delves into the key milestones of the sailor's life and his significant contributions to 18th-century scientific history.

The exhibition, titled “Jorge Juan: The Legacy of a Scientific Sailor,” showcases a total of 120 pieces from the Naval Museum's collections and collections from twenty national and international institutions. Among the contributing institutions are the National Library of Spain, the Prado Museum, the General Archive of Simancas, the National Historical Archive, the Paris Observatory, and the Palace of the Grand Master of the Order of Malta.

Curated by José María Moreno Martín and Blanca Sazatornil Pinedo, the exhibition provides a unique opportunity to commemorate Jorge Juan's life and accomplishments in 2023. Through this showcase, visitors can gain a profound understanding and appreciation for his remarkable contributions to enlightened thought during his era and his significant impact on the international stage as one of Spain's distinguished sailors.
