Location: St George’s Church, East Stonehouse, Plymouth
Type: Grave
Date of death: 12 July 1834 Place of death: Stonehouse, Plymouth (probably in the Royal Naval Hospital)
Note: Records show that Captain John Pilfold was buried, aged 68 years, at St George’s Church, East Stonehouse on 14 July 1832 (Burial Register in Plymouth & West Devon Record Office). The church was sited on West Chapel St, which has now been renamed Durnford St, at the junction with Emma Place. In 1941, the church was badly damaged in a heavy air raid. It remained in this state, and could not be used for worship, until 1957 when it was decided it would not be rebuilt. It was acquired by the local council and demolished, and is presently the site of a car dealer. The remains of those buried there were removed and re-interred at Efford Cemetery. However, there is no record of Captain Pilfold’s remains being included among those which were removed. Therefore it must be concluded that there is now no visible record of the grave on the ground.
