Underneath on a small piece of paper, stuck to the base, is typed the following:
Admiral Sir Eliab Harvey G.C.B.
of Rolls Park, Chigwell, Born 5 Dec 1758
Died 20 Feb 1830. Buried at Hempstead.
He commanded “Fighting Temeraire” at the Battle of Trafalgar, supporting
ship of Lord Nelson with Victory in 1805.
This is the Hatchment as restored by Sir Francis Whitmore, April 1958, after
partial destruction some 76 years previously when the steeple of Hempstead
Church collapsed and destroyed the roof and chancel.
