Overview: The north east corner of St Andrew’s Church, Hempstead contains a chapel dedicated to the Harvey family, which includes Dr William Harvey, who discovered the circulation of the blood. In the crypt beneath the Harvey chapel it is possible to see the Admiral’s coffin. Inside the chapel there is a white marble wall memorial to Admiral Sir Eliab Harvey, and his hatchment hangs on the north wall of the main part of the church.
COFFIN Location: There are three compartments in the crypt that is entered through a steel trapdoor on the north side of the church beneath the Harvey Chapel. The crypt contains about 50 coffins of members of the Harvey family. The Admiral’s coffin, with two others, is in a small bay on the right side.
Description: Made in lead, covered in a velvet draped wooden box with handles, hinges and brass studs. There is a plaque on the top, below the Admiral’s coat of arms.
