The 2021 McMullen Naval History Symposium will take place September 23 - 24 in person as well as virtually at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis MD. The History Department at the Naval Academy hosts this world-renowned event biennially to highlight the latest research on naval and maritime history from academics and practitioners all over the globe. Held since 1973, the symposium has been described as the "largest regular meeting of naval historians in the world" and as the U.S. Navy's "single most important interaction with [an] academic historical audience." I have attended a number of these symposia and have found them incredibly rewarding experiences. Registration is free.
Please access the Symposium web site at https://www.usna.edu/History/Symposium/ to register and obtain the latest agenda, as well as information on available lodging and transportation.
The 2021 Symposium features 54 panels, and a special luncheon event with the Chief of Naval Operations, and keynote lectures by Admiral James G Stavridis, USN (Ret.), Ph.D, and Dr. Kathleen Broom Williams, Distinguished Chair in Naval Heritage Emerita.
Since 2015 The1805 Club has sponsored a panel of naval/maritime historians to present their papers at the Symposium. This year our panel, chaired by 1805 Club Chairman John Rodgaard, will take place on Friday, September 24, from 1330 - 1515. The topic of the panel is: "The Challenges of Operating at a Distance, 1750 - 1815," and should prove to be quite interesting and informative.
In addition, the 1805 Club will host an informal get together in the lounge at the Doubletree Hotel in Annapolis the evening of Wednesday, September 22, at around 1800. This will be a chance for local members and those attending the Symposium to meet and to talk with the Friday panel presenters. Participants can then get together around 1930 to continue the conversation at supper in the hotel for those who wish to do so.
If anyone has questions concerning this event, please contact Pete Stark, U.S. Secretary.
